There is a particular kind of quiet that settles over a construction site before the machines 
arrive — the quiet of 234 acres of Nevada desert, graded flat, waiting. In the fall of 2024, 
that quiet broke. Cranes rose against the Henderson sky. Concrete trucks began their slow 
processions. Gene Haas, the machinist-turned-founder who built a company out of a single 
patented part four decades ago, stood at a podium alongside Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo 
and broke ground on the largest single bet of his company’s history: a 2.4-million-square-foot 
manufacturing plant, the second in Haas Automation’s history, and a declaration that the 
largest machine tool builder in the Western world has no intention of slowing down.
Two-point-four-million square feet is not an expansion in the ordinary sense — it is closer to 
a doubling. It is the kind of number that shows up in headlines about aerospace campuses or 
auto plants, not in a press release from a company that already runs the largest, most modern 
machine tool manufacturing operation in the United States out of Oxnard, California. But that 
has always been the pattern with Haas: the company does not grow by increments. 
It grows in leaps.
